MY DAUGHTER

"But didn't the bible say Let your light so shine before men?" My 7 years old daughter, Jeiel frowned her face and sat down dejectedly

"That they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven." I added and sat down opposite her

She looked up at me "But mum, that's exactly what I did." She threw her hands up in the air

"Firstly, don't disrespect me throwing those hands in the air" I scolded

"I'm sorry ma" she apologized with a low tone

I exhaled and stood up, going to sit beside her

I put my hands across her shoulders and she laid her head on mine.

"I was only trying to... to do what the scripture says. You and daddy taught me to follow what the bible teaches. That's what I've done all my life and you know it mum. Why is it different this time?" She cooed

I caressed her head and began explaining to her "You only misunderstood the scripture, it happens."

"God isn't the author of confusion, why should I misunderstood scriptures?"

"The confusion in your head was not created by God, it's your lack of understanding. The same bible says, study to shew yourself approved, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. What word of truth is that scripture referring to?" I asked her

"The bible"

"That means rightly dividing the bible, right?"

"Yes "

"Can I say rightly interpreting the bible?" I asked her

She sat up and thought for a while before nodding her head

"Good. So, if the bible is asking us to study in order to interpret the bible rightly, doesn't that mean it can be interpreted wrongly?" I asked her

"Are... Ohh... So, I had the wrong interpretation of the scripture?" She asked

"Dear, you had the worst interpretation of that scripture" I laughed

She frowned "but mum, it's an easy scripture, Let your light so shine before men..." She said and shrugged "What is there to misunderstand?"

"You're missing out the last part Jeiel. ... That they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven. That scripture don't say nothing about being proud" I raised my brows

"But mum...."

"Listen..." I said calmly "Whatever we do to shine our light, must be done in a way that is good and that can cause people to glorify our father in heaven."

"Wasn't that what I did?" She asked

I frowned.

"I've always told you not to try justifying your wrongs. You were wrong Jeiel and I'm sure you know you should apologize to your classmates" I said

She frowned

I folded my arms "I thought you always did whatever the bible says? Does the bible not teach us to apologize?"

"I will do that mum" she said and saluted

We both chuckled

"Thank you mum" she added and hugged me .

  1. Beautiful! Love how this story subtly reminded me that the scripture can be wrongly divided. Jeiel left out the other half, which we often do to suite our desires.
